'Ibogaine - Rite of Passage' is a 50-minute documentary project about the use of ibogaine for the healing of various forms of addictions and its spiritual background. It started as a project at the Utrecht School of the Arts. Since then many organizations and companies are supporting it and it has become a professional production. The filming was done in three phases: in The Netherlands and Mexico, in Canada and USA and in Gabon in Africa.
The premiere took place at the Dutch Film Festival in September 2004 and it has been since then shown at numerous conferences, schools and film festivals.

Ibogaine is substance derived from a root of an african plant that can be found in Gabon. Initially it was used in the initiation process of the Bwiti culture. In the 60's Howard Lots of discovered its psychoactive substances that have anti-addiction effects.

Ibogaine is surrounded with controversy. It seems that the decisions about the use of ibogaine for treating the addictions are made exclusively on the political and economical level instead of on the rational level. Despite the results that confirm its good effects, pharmaceutical companies and governments don't show the appropriate interest and rather remain sceptic.
