Slovenia represented by Marko Jakše at the 59th Venice Biennale

On Thursday, 21 April 2022, the Slovenian Pavilion at the Arsenale will open as part of the 59th Venice Biennale. Marko Jakše is representing Slovenia this year with the exhibition Without a Master, which will be open to the public from 23 April to 27 November 2022.
In her statement, the artistic director of the Biennale, Italian curator Cecilia Alemani, stressed the importance of fantasy transformations, both material and immaterial, for the present moment. The title of this edition of the Biennale is a reference to The Milk of Dreams, a book by the British-Mexican painter and writer Leonora Carrington (1917–2011), who started her career as a surrealist artist.
»In the context of this year’s Venice Biennale theme, Jakše’s paintings challenge the idea of controlling nature and the related categories of existence, the scientific systems, and the knowledge of what actually is the primordial in and outside us; and above all, how something is,« said the curator of the Slovenian Pavilion exhibition, Robert Simonišek, PhD. »Jakše’s response to these questions covers a broad range from Nietzschean Dionysian abandon to meta-symbolistic and meta-romantic allegories reflecting the enthralling drama of human passions and yearning – mysterious games without a master. The enigmatic images are so convincingly coherent and rounded out that they function as self-sufficient realities, underscoring the mundane predictability of our everyday ideas and lives,« he added.
The commissioner of the exhibition is Aleš Vaupotič, PhD, the director of Moderna galerija, and Robert Simonišek, PhD, the curator.
