LOST & FOUND IN TRANSLATION

A selection of artistic projects reflecting on the centrality of language in contemporary mobility

On Friday, 14 February 2020, at 5 p. m., you are kindly invited to the MMC KIBLA for a lecture entitled Lost & Found in Translation by Paola Paleari, curator, publicist and contemporary art critic. The event is the first in a series of lectures and workshops held by the Association X-OP as part of the project Risk Change (2016—2020). Between February and May you will have a chance to listen and talk to (international) guests working in different spheres of culture, contemporary visual arts, filmmaking, architecture, and education.

Migration processes are known to affect not only the psyche of migrants, but also their language. Having to cope with a totally new environment, migrants find themselves grappling with an alienating situation that undermines their very possibility of communicating. This condition, that on one side can operate as a barrier towards integration, can on the other lead to new expressive possibilities connecting people beyond their mother tongue.

The talk will try to illustrate the various manifestations of this crucial aspect of mobility by presenting a number of projects by contemporary artists whose practices actively focus on language, belonging and migration.

Paola Paleari (b. 1984) is an Italian independent curator, editor and writer based in Copenhagen.
Between 2013 and 2018 she worked as deputy editor at YET magazine and she is currently artistic director at JIR SANDEL.
Her main area of interest is the photographic language and its relations with the contemporary visual culture and art practices. She is also interested in the intersection between critical and creative writing and often intertwines art criticism with other forms of storytelling.
