Magic. Metaphor. Fiction. Matter. Intuition. Interpretation. Illusion. Fact. Image. Drawing. Print. Object. Home. Psychiatry. Internet. Substitute.
4 × 4 drive. Like my old Land Rover. We overcame every obstacle – water, earth, air, fire. There was this one time when we slid down a muddy, snow-covered field and those blockheads – educated & uneducated – grinned with glee as they watched us. They even called for a cow to pull us out. But we didn’t need one. Engaging the diff lock, shifting the lever, careful braking and steering were enough to climb back to the top. And leaving the blockheads with morose, puffed-up expressions and more or less – it’s their business after all – long faces…
Yes. 4 × 4! For traveling through crosstime!
Biography
Dalibor Bori Zupančič moves from Ljubljana to Maribor in the early 1970s to study, where he contributes comics and satirical illustrations to the student magazine Katedra and participates in the student cultural movement. After returning to his native Celje, he turns to conceptual art and process-based work (Manifesto of Total Naturalism). Following the principle of “destructivism”, he destroys his own works and leaves them to time and decay, mostly out of public view. At the invitation of a foreign selector, part of this production is exhibited in 2019 at the 9th Triennial of Contemporary Art U3, Alive and Dead, at the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana.
After completing a specialization in art therapy in the Netherlands, he regularly collaborates with the Vojnik Psychiatric Hospital and is also a mentor in the Art as Assistance program run by the Ljubljana Faculty of Education.
He later develops an interest in the virtual, digital world. He depicts the real – is it truly real? – through a practice which he termed “touchwing”: drawing with a finger on a mobile screen. He publishes on X.
A special place in his practice is given to so-called “activages” and “objectages”, which originate in the earliest phases of his work. Their basic focus is time – due to aging, decay, obsolescence, and abandonment, these are entirely non-commercial artifacts.
The basic credo of his practice, to paraphrase the words of his literary alter ego Quadrizz Guhnga, is: “Art is not decoration. Art is Energy.”
