Jože Šubic : Who is holding the water here?

You are invited to join us for an opening of sculptures by Jože Šubic entitled Kdo tukaj drži vodo? (Who is holding the water here?), on Thursday, May 10th 2012, at 7.30pm at the south facade of the court 'Žički dvor' (Pristan) in Maribor.

Not far from his "self-service Eros center", Jože Šubic creates another impressive, site-specific image on the banks of the Drava river in Maribor, located in the abandoned quarters of Žički dvor. With an artistic intervention into space, and tracking the past investments of power and eroticism, he unveils in multiple layers the rich history of the court and its near surroundings. For everyone seeking momentary gracefulness, or perhaps even more, outside of galleries, but also on the streets and window niches. Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder!
With a carefully selected iconography of six clay sculptures the artists reminds us that every country has its local particularities, and every historical period its ideals - aesthetic, erotic, and of course, moral.
Sculptures of women's heads submerged into the Drava river are a unique testimony to the exclusion from public life, without shouting from the rooftops that many of the pleasures can be bought, and that sexual pleasures are simply not innocent goods.
