Rick and Lara Ritoša Roberts: HOMESPUN

HOMESPUN was a multimedia exhibition consisting of sculpture, paintings, drawings, sound, films and projections by Richard Glynn Roberts and Lara Ritoša Roberts.

The opening took place on Friday, 21st of December 2005.

It was their first joint show and their largest so far. In their work both artists question one’s sense of belonging and the role of memory in the shaping of identity.

Richard’s painting and drawings from the 1960’s Kodachrome slides found on the streets of South London, are drawn and painted snippets of Britain – often grey and mundane yet engaging – everything that he imagined while growing up in South Africa. Through his Super8 films of and sound pieces Richard is revisiting his early love of the Beatles, his memories of his uncles’ garage band and an appreciation of classic cars.

Lara’s installations and objects speak about “identity lost”: growing up in ex- Yugoslavia in the early 1980s. She transforms authentic and found objects such as old bedding and curtains into flags stripped of symbols, accentuating the fine line between the public and the private sphere, the state and the body. By merging the real and the remembered, she questions just how much of us is conditioned by the systems we grow up in.
