Byzantine Cadillac - audio visual cabaret

"Byzantine Cadillac" is part of a continuing effort to seemlessly integrate fundamental Eastern and Western musical elements in a contemporary popular music, not through pastiche or cartoon juxtaposition, but by working from the properties of sound itself and ancient ideas that existed before there even was an "East" or "West".

The music is tuned to 5- and 19- limit Just Intonation, sometimes branching off into related non-octave tunings, but the modalities employed are not restricted in ways traditionally ascociated with Just Intonation. By synthesizing and recording all sounds with an ear on the tuning, it is possible to use complete chromaticism and other modern techniques in a very smooth way- in other words, timbre, melody and rhythm are interrelated from the very beginning to the overtones of the instruments. The one (more or less) equal-tempered instrument used, the guitar, is layered into a detuned "chorus", blurring the sense of pitch in order to work with the other, not equally tempered, instruments.

Working this way, and using a melodic approach to rhythm (i.e., one can sing all the rhythms), the effect is such that only skilled musicians even notice that this "popular-sounding" music is built entirely of foreign elements unknown in pop.

Audio visual cabaret was performed on Friday, the 10th of March 2006 at 10 PM in Multimedia centre Kibla:
