31 YEARS OF SHAME: Amnesty International Slovenia's exhibition on the 31st anniversary of the erasure
7 April–6 May 2023
artKIT

We kindly invite you to the opening of the exhibition 31 years of shame in the company of the erased and Amnesty International Slovenia (AIS), which will take place on Friday, 7 April 2023, at 7 p.m. in artKIT.

INVITATION (PDF)

Amnesty International Slovenia developed this exhibition to commemorate the memory of the erasure and the struggle of the erased top redress of wrongs. On February 26, 1992, Slovenia illegally deleted 25,671 permanent residents from the register of permanent residents, without notification and without the possibility of appeal. Overnight, they were left without legal status, without valid documents, without rights. The consequences were merciless: thousands were deported from Slovenia, they had no access to a doctor, social assistance, their employers had to terminate their employment, their children were not registered in the birth register. They ceased to exist on paper.

The exhibition is a tribute to the courage and unwavering perseverance of the erased. The erasure shaped people's lives and cut them into such tiny pieces that neither the decisions of the Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights nor the efforts of many in civil society could put them back together until the end. However, those erased from the darkness and pain of loneliness rose up, connected and organized into a movement, into a rebellion, into a multi-year campaign. They collectivized themselves and civil society and created the strongest, most long-lasting and persistent movement we know.

The exhibition is dedicated to Aleksandar Todorović, a tireless fighter for the redress of wrongs for the erased.

You are invited to sign the petition of the Amnesty Slovenia and the Peace Institute asking the government to prepare legal measures which will enable the restoration of status and redress of wrongs for all those who have been erased. Sign the petition on the QR code or at https://www.amnesty.si/peticija-izbrisani.en
