We kindly invite you to the opening of the solo exhibition Classically emancipated by Katja Bednařik Sudec, which will take place on Friday, 16 October 2020, at 6 p. m. in the artKIT gallery, Glavni trg 14, Maribor.

INVITATION (PDF)

The exhibition Classically emancipated introduces a series of works created within the last decade, among which the red thread is weaved by known, though imagined, figures from fairy tales. The artist expands the field of painting with versatile materials and techniques. In that way, she stages parallel situations inspired by fragments of fairy tales about Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, and Goldilocks. Instead of the space colored by gender asymmetries, the piece of an ancient world becomes space that allows the staging of women's contemporary (occasionally traumatic) experiences.

Katja Bednařik Sudec
(1979 Rakičan by Murska Sobota) is a painter and an educator. She graduated in 2004 from the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts and Design, where she also obtained her MFA in 2007. In February 2011, she completed her studies at the Art in Context Institute of the Berlin University of the Arts with her dissertation 'Mind-fictions in conversations about the arts' (Theory of Cultural Education and Art Mediation / professional fields: artwork in cultural institutions and artwork in the context of science and image-forming media). During her studies, she received scholarships from the Ministry of Culture, Erasmus–Socrates, and Zois Fund and was awarded the student Prešeren Award for graphic arts in 2003. As an artist, she also received the DAAD research scholarship, was nominated for the Essl Art Award, and was a finalist of the 2007 Gesellschafter Art Award, art-fair 21 in Köln (D). In 2019 she received Grand Prix at international extempore Piran, Coast Gallerie Piran (SLO), and extempore Bled (SLO). She has developed educational and arts programs for different institutions. Between  2011 and 2014, she conceived and led a series of educational programs for vulnerable groups in collaboration with the ŠKUC Society and received funding from the European Social Funds.
