Volunteering: new future for young offenders

Volunteering: new future for young offenders

Volunteering: new future for young offenders  is an 7 days study visit to be held from 25.03. till 02.04.2012 in Italy. The visit will gather 21 participants, speakers and facilitators (plus 20 young offenders) from 13 partner organisations and institutions
from 9 countries (IT, HR, EE, GR, ES, SI, IS, PL, FR).

Theme of the visit is the study of the potentialities of local and international volunteering as part of the rehabilitation process and as tools for non formal education for young offenders and, more in general, youth at risk of social marginalization or social deviance.

Different studies have shown that the percentage of recidivism is strongly lower when young offenders are involved in voluntary service activities instead or in parallel to “traditional” correctional and treatment tools.

On this base, the project will give the participants the possibility to know the experience of involvement of young offenders in local and international voluntary service activities and will, at the same time, give to a group of young offenders the opportunity to directly “tell” their history and their path of social rehabilitation, also evidencing the opportunities offered by Youth in Action and other international mobility programmes.

Activities will include several different methodologies, with visits to local projects/partners, direct meeting with social and youth workers of the Juvenile Justice system and of local NGOs, show of short movies about past experiences and above all, the direct meeting with young offenders who are experiencing or have experienced the involvement in voluntary service activities.
All participants, both youth workers and young offenders, will have a direct and active role in the project since they’ll have the opportunity to exchange their experience learning by each-other.
