MIGAV pre-event

Program:
Set one:
Live Video by Katherine Liberovskaya, with Live mixing of audio pieces by Phill Niblock

In this live set Niblock mixes between audio pieces based on diverse field recordings which are very different from his music compositions.

Liberovskaya mixes video with Jitter/Max/MSP from a vast personal database of clips shot over the past fifteen years.

Set two:
Music and Images by Phill Niblock

Phill Niblock is a New York-based minimalist composer and multi-media musician and director of Experimental Intermedia, a foundation born in the flames of 1968’s barricade-hopping. He has been a maverick presence on the fringes of the avant garde ever since. In the history books Niblock is the forgotten Minimalist. That’s as maybe: no one ever said the history books were infallible anyway.

Phill Niblock (b. 1933, USA) is an artist whose fifty-year career spans minimalist and experimental music, film and photography. Since 1985, he has served as director of Experimental Intermedia, a foundation for avant-garde music based in New York with a branch in Ghent, and curator of the foundation’s record label XI. Known for his thick, loud drones of music, Niblock’s signature sound is filled with microtones of instrumental timbres that generate many other tones in the performance space. In 2013, his diverse artistic career was the subject of a retrospective realised in partnership between Circuit (Contemporary Art Centre Lausanne) and Musée de l’Elysée. The following year Niblock was honoured with the prestigious Foundation for Contemporary Arts John Cage Award.

So in 1999 we wrote about his performance: "To the end minimal, but not easy."
And we also recorded it –
