Bratko Bibič: The Accordion and I

Bratko Bibič is a musician, (film score) composer, accordionist, soloist, and a member of the ensembles Accordion Tribe, Begnagrad, and Nimal.

Bratko Bibič (b. 1957) holds an MA in philosophy, and is an internationally acclaimed composer, accordionist and vocalist with an extensive discography and concert history. He is considered one of the pioneers of the so-called „emancipation“ of the accordion from the stereotypes associated with it; one of the beginners of world music (1970s) and later among the forerunners of the experimental avantgardes of new music in the New York Downtown scene (1980s). He collaborated with numerous Slovene and international ensembles. Parallel to his work as a musician, he is engaged in a variety of other artistic practices (professionally or as an amateur), most notably film, as well as cultural studies and cultural politics. He wrote a number of articles and published several publications, the most recent one titled The Noise from Metelkova (Hrup z Metelkove, 2003).

Bratko Bibič has been an active composer, performer and interpreter since 1973, appearing in different home-based or international ensembles, and contributing to various experimental and multimedia projects conceived for soloists, duets, and collectives.

His bands The Madleys, Begnagrad (1+2), and Nimal are listed in The Guardian's New Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock, the All Music Guide, and others. He regularly collaborates with various film co-productions, while his album Bratko Bibič & The Madleys was nominated in 1996 for The German Record Critics' Award in the World Music category, and was declared by two Slovene music critics (Ičo Vidmar – Mladina, and Sonja Porle – Glasbena Mladina) as the best Slovene album of 1996 in the 'different music' category.

Bratko Bibič is the founding member of the international ensemble The Madleys, which has changed gradually over the past two decades, with regular members playing alongside distinguished visiting musicians in extended ensembles, associated with distinct concert and multimedia projects. He is definitely the accordionist with the widest international acclaim in Slovenia. The accordion is one of the most widely used and most popular musical instruments in the world, which has recently paved its way to virtually all music genres. As part of the typically Slovene folk music genre, the accordion has also become an important symbol of identification, passive or active, positive or negative, for the majority of Slovenes belonging to all generations. The accordion occupied and still occupies a similar role even in other cultures and societies. Bratko Bibič, as if following the „follow the money“ principle (if you want to find the person who did it), follows the accordion (because that's how he finds the right persons for the job) across labyrinths of the changing social, cultural, artistic and musical conditions, which are often accompanied and supported by various historical and/or topical musical and accordionist practices: it seems that the accordion often crosses people's ways when they least expect it.
