Creative re-use of heritage: 3D food printing for promoting Slovenian cuisine in Australia

Abstract: Culinary heritage is an important indicator of the cultural identity of migrants. We have focused our research on culinary heritage of Slovenians in Australia and how 3D food printing could be utilised in museum makerspaces to evoke creative potential of younger generations of migrants, including children and teenagers. As discovered through in-depth interviews, due to their limited time and complicated making process, younger generation rarely bake traditional Slovenian desserts, such as potica, a Slovenian circular cake-like roll. 3D food printing could be used to introduce traditional cuisine to a tech-savvy migrant youth.

Moreover, an additive process of 3D printing enables new creative reinterpretations of dark (filling) and light (dough) pattern, not limited to a roll-shape. Makerspace users could use a special up to design their own pattern, e.g. inspired by the Slovenian carnation patterns available through online collections. In this framework, we explore how heritage content can be creatively re-used through online collections and digital fabricators.

The research has been made possible through the support of a 2015 Endeavour Research Fellowship, a postdoctoral research provided by the Australian Government Department of Education, of Kaja Antlej at the Centre for Creative and Cultural Research, Faculty of Arts and Design, University of Canberra under supervision of Professor Angelina Russo.

The Other Image

The lecture by Tadej Vindiš entitled The Other Image takes as its starting point the photographic image, which is undergoing numerous changes in the digital systems' era. We live in a world of images, which today no longer act as just subjective expressions, but have become socially engaged and are the carriers of direct material consequences. The Other Image considers five aspects of the contemporary photographic image: the existential significance of photography, bulk photography storage in contemporary digital archives, the hallucinogenic nature of the digital world, the danger of digital algorithm bias, and understanding photography as a potential weapon within surveillance systems. Through a discussion of the various aspects of contemporary digital photography images the lecture indirectly exposes the problems faced in present-day digital cultures.
